Myrcene - The Most Common Cannabis Terpene
Myrcene is the dominant terpene in approximately 40% of commercial cannabis cultivars - and is the molecule most associated with the "couch-lock" sedation profile of classic indica genetics. Understanding myrcene helps you read flower COAs, predict effects, and choose strains by terpene rather than just by indica/sativa label. We sell myrcene-dominant strains at Greenleaf Wellness - see the shop page and flower hub, and terpenes guide for the broader terpene category.

What is myrcene?
Myrcene (β-myrcene) is a monoterpene produced in cannabis trichomes, but also found in mango, hops, lemongrass, and thyme. It's a small, lipid-soluble molecule with an earthy, herbal, slightly fruity aroma. In cannabis, myrcene typically tests at 0.2–1.5% of total flower mass and is the most-abundant terpene by volume in many indica-leaning cultivars.
Strains where myrcene leads
What myrcene does
Animal studies and limited human data suggest myrcene contributes to:
The "0.5% rule" - sometimes attributed to cannabis writer Dr. Steep Hill labs - proposes that myrcene above 0.5% predicts a couch-lock effect profile. The evidence is observational rather than clinically proven, but the pattern is consistent across modern cannabis testing data. See cannabinoids explained for how myrcene interacts with the THC system.
- Body-relaxation and mild sedation
- Enhanced THC permeability across the blood-brain barrier (one popular hypothesis - limited human evidence)
- Anti-inflammatory pathway activation
- Mild analgesic effect

Practical buying tips
When you read a flower COA, scan to the terpene panel. If myrcene is the #1 terpene at >0.5%, plan an evening session - that flower will lean sedative regardless of the indica/sativa label. Conversely, if myrcene is below 0.3% and limonene or terpinolene leads, expect a more energizing profile.
Honest caveat
Terpene profiles are real chemistry but they're not deterministic. Individual response varies based on tolerance, dose, and prior cannabis experience. Myrcene is also generally regarded as safe at typical cannabis levels - it occurs in many common foods.
