Granddaddy Purple - The Bay Area Indica That Set the Purple Standard

Granddaddy Purple, also known as GDP, is a heavy indica bred by Ken Estes in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003. The cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud produced a cultivar that combined the deep grape aroma of Urkle with the dense bud structure of Big Bud, and GDP went on to become the reference cultivar for "purple indica" in California and beyond.

TL;DR

Granddaddy Purple is heavy indica (~85I/15S). THC typically 17–23%. Dominant terpenes: myrcene, pinene, caryophyllene. Effects: full body relaxation, sleep onset, appetite, mood support; widely considered a "before bed" strain. Available at Greenleaf Wellness in flower, pre-rolls, vape, and concentrate.

Lineage and history

Lineage and history

Bred by Ken Estes (Grand Daddy Purp Collective) in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, crossing Purple Urkle (the deep-purple grape-aroma parent) with Big Bud (the structure parent). Stabilized as a clone-only line and later seeded out, GDP became one of the most-prescribed strains for nighttime medical use in California's pre-2016 medical-only market and remains a staple of evening menus.

03

Cannabinoid profile

THC commonly 17–23% - modest by 2026 standards but appropriate for sleep applications where ceiling is not the priority. CBD under 0.5%. Trace CBN is reported at month 2–3 of cure, contributing to the heavier sedation arc; properly aged GDP delivers more sleep effect than fresh GDP.

Effect profile

Effect profile

Onset 10–20 minutes inhaled (slower than sativa-leaning cultivars). Peak 30–60 minutes. Duration 2–4 hours, with sleep often arriving inside that window. Reported effects: full body relaxation, drowsy mood lift, appetite, eventual sleep onset. GDP is one of the few strains where users report the body-effect arriving before the head-effect, which is the opposite of GSC and Wedding Cake.

Forms we stock

Flower jars (eighth, quarter, half, ounce), pre-rolls (single + pack), 510 carts (distillate and live resin), disposable pens, live-resin concentrate. Edibles with GDP extract are popular as nighttime gummies. Check the live menu.

08 · Dosing

Dosing

Inhaled: one or two pulls, wait 15 minutes - the slower onset means new users sometimes overshoot by re-dosing too early. Edibles with GDP extract follow the 5 mg start. Time edible dose 60–90 minutes before desired sleep onset for best results.
