Microdosing Cannabis - How Sub-Threshold Dosing Actually Works
Microdosing cannabis means consuming a dose well below what produces a typical "high" - usually 1–2.5 mg of THC versus the 5–10 mg standard recreational dose. The goal is to capture mood-elevation, anti-inflammatory, or focus benefits without the psychoactive intensity. Microdosing is a real practice with research support, particularly for medical and wellness-leaning consumers. We carry low-dose products at Greenleaf Wellness - see the edibles hub, tinctures hub, and shop page.

What "microdose" actually means in cannabis
| Dose | Range | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Microdose | 1–2.5 mg THC | Sub-threshold, mood/focus only |
| Low recreational | 2.5–5 mg | Mild psychoactivity |
| Standard recreational | 5–10 mg | Classical high |
| High dose | 10–25 mg | Strong, possibly uncomfortable |
| Heavy dose | 25 mg+ | Experienced users only |
Product formats best for microdosing
For the precise-dose use case, tinctures and capsules win over vaping or smoking. See edibles dosing chart for the full dosing curve.
- Tinctures - easiest to titrate. Drop-by-drop control allows 1 mg increments.
- Low-dose gummies - 2.5 mg or 5 mg per piece, allow precise stacking.
- Capsules - 2.5 mg and 5 mg single-dose capsules eliminate guesswork.
- Vape inhalation - harder to microdose (each puff varies); use 1 short inhalation and wait 10 minutes before evaluating.
Why microdosing works (in brief)
The cannabis dose-response curve is biphasic - meaning low doses can produce one effect (mood-lift, mild focus) while high doses produce different effects (sedation, anxiety in some people). At microdose levels, THC binds CB1 receptors at low occupancy, producing subtle modulation rather than full activation. CBD added to a microdose THC product can further smooth the experience. See cannabinoids explained for the receptor mechanism.

Practical microdosing protocol
Start with 1 mg THC (or 2.5 mg if 1 mg isn't available). Wait 90 minutes for an edible to fully absorb. Evaluate: do you feel anything? If yes, that's your microdose threshold. If no, add another 1 mg the next day until you feel the lightest possible effect. Once you find your threshold, hold there - don't escalate.
Honest caveat
Microdosing is not a medical treatment for any condition. Some consumers report subjective benefits (focus, mood, reduced anxiety) at microdose levels - but individual response varies enormously. If you're medicating for a specific condition, talk to a healthcare provider rather than self-experimenting. See tolerance break if microdoses stop working.
