Sour Diesel - The East Coast Sativa That Defined Daytime Cannabis
Sour Diesel, often shortened to "Sour D," is the canonical sativa-dominant daytime cultivar in the U.S. cannabis market. Bred in the early 1990s in the U.S. Northeast - most accounts trace it to a Chemdawg 91 x Super Skunk x Northern Lights cross - Sour Diesel set the template for "energetic, focused, conversational" sativa effects that competitors have spent two decades trying to clone.

TL;DR
Sour Diesel is sativa-dominant (~75S/25I). THC typically 18–25%. Dominant terpenes: caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene, with the unmistakable diesel-fuel aroma. Effects: cerebral lift, energy, focus, talkative, mild appetite. Greenleaf Wellness stocks Sour Diesel in flower, pre-rolls, vape carts, and concentrate.
Lineage and history
The accepted origin is a Chemdawg 91 mother crossed with a Super Skunk x Northern Lights male, stabilized by AJ in the New York / New Jersey corridor in the early 1990s. The phenotype later traveled to California medical menus through the late 1990s and is now grown nationally. The aroma - sharp, gasoline-like, citrus rind in the back - is unmistakable in a jar and survives extraction better than most cultivars, which is why Sour Diesel live resin remains a top-five concentrate seller in NV markets.
Cannabinoid profile
THC commonly 18–25%, with elite cuts in the 27–28% range. CBD under 0.5%. The cannabinoid contribution to Sour Diesel's "up" effect is less about THC ceiling and more about the absence of myrcene-dominant body sedation found in OG-family cultivars.
Terpene profile
| Terpene | Typical % | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Caryophyllene | 0.5–0.8% | Peppery, CB2 binding |
| Limonene | 0.4–0.7% | Citrus, mood lift |
| Myrcene | 0.2–0.4% | Lower than indica reference |
| Pinene | 0.2–0.4% | Pine, alertness |
| Ocimene | 0.1–0.3% | Sweet-herbal, energizing |
Effect profile
Onset 5–10 minutes inhaled (faster than indica reference). Peak 30–45 minutes. Duration 2–3 hours, sometimes longer for users new to the strain. Reported effects: cerebral euphoria, focus, conversational energy, mild appetite, occasional creative-task amplification. Anxiety-prone users should start at half their normal dose; the same chemovar that drives "focus" can drive "racing" if dosed past tolerance.
Who Sour Diesel suits
Daytime users who want function-preserving sativa effects.
Creative tasks, social events, outdoor activity.
Mood support without sedation.
Not for evening sleep, anxiety-prone users (start low), or anyone who prefers myrcene-heavy body cultivars.
Forms we stock
Flower jars (eighth, quarter, half, ounce), pre-rolls (single + pack + infused), 510-thread distillate and live-resin carts (live resin recommended for terpene preservation), disposable pens, live-resin and live-rosin concentrates. Sour Diesel is a top-three concentrate seller because its terpene profile carries through extraction. Check the live menu.
Dosing
Inhaled: one or two pulls, wait 10 minutes. Sour Diesel rewards patience - the cerebral component peaks slower than the inhale arc suggests. Edibles infused with Sour Diesel extract follow the 5 mg start. For the cleanest sativa expression, prefer live resin over distillate.
