THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) - The "Sports Cannabinoid"
THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is a structural cousin of THC with very different effects - sometimes nicknamed the "sports cannabinoid" or "diet weed" because higher doses produce a clear-headed, energetic, appetite-suppressing effect distinct from typical THC sedation. THCV is rare in commercial cannabis but a growing category at well-stocked Nevada dispensaries. We carry THCV-rich strains and tinctures at Greenleaf Wellness when available - see the shop page and strains hub.

What is THCV?
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is a propyl-side-chain analog of THC - meaning the molecular structure is similar but the side chain has 3 carbons instead of THC's 5. This structural difference produces meaningfully different receptor pharmacology. At low doses, THCV acts as a CB1 antagonist (reducing typical THC effects). At higher doses, THCV behaves as a CB1 partial agonist (producing a mild psychoactive effect that's clear-headed and energizing rather than sedating).
Where THCV occurs naturally
THCV is most abundant in African landrace cannabis cultivars, particularly Durban Poison and South African genetics, where it can reach 1 to 4% of total cannabinoid mass. Most modern American hybrids contain trace THCV (0.1 to 0.5%). Specifically bred THCV-rich cultivars now exist with 5 to 8% THCV - these are uncommon but increasingly available. See Durban Poison for the original landrace expression.
Effect distinctions vs THC

THCV product formats
THCV-rich tinctures are the most common THCV format on Nevada shelves. Some live-resin vape carts derived from THCV-rich strains offer concentrated THCV. THCV-rich flower (Durban Poison, Pineapple Purps, Doug's Varin) is occasionally available - check our flower hub for current cultivars.
Honest caveat
THCV is non-FDA-evaluated. The "appetite suppressant" and metabolic claims are based on preliminary animal and small human studies - not large clinical trials. THCV products at typical doses (5 to 10 mg) produce mild, clear-headed effects. Stacking high-dose THCV with high-dose THC produces an unusual blend; start low. See tolerance break if effects diminish.
