Zkittlez parents are credited as Grape Ape × Grapefruit, with an unknown third parent (often speculated as a Northern Lights pheno) - the Bay Area breeders Terphogz refused to fully disclose the genetics. The cultivar was released around 2013 and won the 2015 Emerald Cup, 2015 High Times Cannabis Cup (San Francisco), and 2016 Cannabis Cup (NorCal). It became a flagship for the "loud-fruit-aroma" wave that defined late-2010s commercial cannabis breeding.
