Storing Cannabis Properly - How to Preserve Potency, Flavor, and Safety
Cannabis flower, concentrate, and edibles all degrade over time when stored incorrectly. Bad storage costs you potency, terpene aroma, and - for edibles - food safety. Good storage extends a flower's quality window from 6 months to 12+ months, and protects concentrate aroma against premature loss. This page covers what cannabis actually needs from storage. We sell everything fresh at Greenleaf Wellness - see the shop page for current rotation, and reserve for pickup so you can take stuff home and store it correctly.

What degrades cannabis
| Agent | Effect on flower | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Heat (>75°F) | Accelerates THC→CBN oxidation | Cool, room-temp storage |
| Light (UV) | Breaks down THC and terpenes | Opaque container or dark cabinet |
| Oxygen | Oxidizes cannabinoids | Airtight container |
| Low humidity (<55% RH) | Dries flower, loses terpenes | Boveda/Integra packs |
| High humidity (>65% RH) | Mold/microbial risk | Boveda/Integra packs |
Recommended storage by product type
Flower - Glass jar (UV-resistant or kept in a dark drawer) with a Boveda or Integra Boost humidity-control pack (62% RH variant). Avoid plastic baggies for long-term storage; plastics interact with terpenes and degrade them. A properly stored eighth holds quality for 6–12 months.
Pre-rolls - Original sealed tubes are fine for 1–3 months. For longer storage, transfer to a Boveda-controlled glass jar.
Concentrates - Original parchment + airtight container is best. Refrigerator storage extends shelf life for live resin and rosin (which are more aroma-sensitive than distillate). Avoid silicone containers for distillate over 30 days - distillate's terpenes can bond with silicone. See concentrates hub.
Vape carts - Store upright, mouthpiece-up, in a cool dry place. Avoid leaving in a car (heat melts the oil; cold thickens it and can damage coil). 6-month shelf life typical.
Edibles - Original sealed packaging until ready to use. After opening, transfer to airtight container. Refrigerate for shelf-life extension. Mind the manufacturer's stated expiration - edible food safety still applies. Cannabis-infused chocolate stores up to 12 months sealed and refrigerated.
Tinctures - Cool, dark, upright. Most tinctures use alcohol or MCT oil base - both shelf-stable for 12–24 months sealed.
Child and pet safety
NV state law requires cannabis be stored in child-resistant packaging in homes with children present. Good practice: lockable container even without children - accidental ingestion by guests or pets is a documented ER vector. Cannabis is acutely toxic to dogs and cats - a chocolate edible to a dog is a double poisoning (chocolate + cannabis). See cannabis and pets warning for the safety detail.

Honest caveat
Even ideal storage doesn't preserve cannabis indefinitely. Fresh-cured flower has the best terpene profile in months 2–6 after harvest. Cannabis isn't "wine" - there's no aging benefit. Buy what you'll use within 6 months when possible.
