CBN for Sleep - What the Cannabinoid Actually Does
CBN (cannabinol) is the cannabinoid most associated with sleep - but the relationship is more nuanced than the marketing suggests. CBN forms naturally as THC degrades from age, light exposure, and oxidation. Understanding what CBN does and doesn't do helps you pick the right sleep product. We stock CBN-dominant edibles, tinctures, and ratio products at Greenleaf Wellness - see the edibles hub and shop page for product context.

What is CBN?
Cannabinol (CBN) is a non-psychoactive (or very mildly psychoactive) cannabinoid that forms when THC oxidizes over time - meaning aged cannabis or aged THC concentrate naturally develops CBN as the THC molecules break down. Modern producers also synthesize CBN directly to make consistent-dose CBN sleep products. CBN binds CB1 and CB2 receptors at much lower affinity than THC, which is why CBN feels mild compared to a high-THC equivalent dose.
What the research actually shows
Sleep claims for CBN are popular but the scientific evidence is thin compared to claims for the parent cannabinoid THC. The clearest, most-replicated finding: CBN combined with THC produces a stronger sedative effect than either alone - a fit interaction. CBN-only products at typical 5–10 mg per piece have weaker direct sleep evidence than CBN+THC at 5+5 mg. See cannabinoids explained for the broader cannabinoid system.

What CBN-dominant pages actually hide
Many "CBN sleep" products are formulated as CBN+THC blends - and the THC component is often what's actually driving the sedation. If you want pure CBN without THC psychoactivity, look for products labeled "CBN-only" or "CBN-isolate" rather than "CBN sleep formula" - the latter often contains 5–10 mg THC per dose. Read the per-piece breakdown on the back of the package.
Honest caveat
CBN sleep products are not FDA-evaluated medical treatments. If you have chronic insomnia, talk to a healthcare provider - cannabinoid sleep aids are one tool among many. Tolerance develops with repeated use; see tolerance break if CBN sleep stops working.
