Decarboxylation Explained - How Cannabis Becomes Active
Decarboxylation ("decarb") is the chemical process that converts the non-psychoactive THCa naturally produced by the cannabis plant into the psychoactive THC humans actually feel. Without decarb, raw cannabis is largely inactive when eaten - meaning understanding the chemistry matters for anyone making homemade edibles, tinctures, or any cannabis food product. We sell pre-decarbed edibles and tinctures at Greenleaf Wellness for consumers who want consistent dosing without the home-decarb step - see the edibles hub and tinctures hub. For raw flower, see the shop page and flower hub.

What decarb actually is
THCa contains a carboxylic acid group (-COOH) attached to the THC molecule. Heat causes this group to release as carbon dioxide (CO2), leaving behind active THC. The reaction looks like:
THCa (heat) → THC + CO2
This is the same chemistry that occurs when you smoke or vape - combustion or vaporization heat-decarbs the cannabis instantly. For edibles and oil-based infusions, the decarb has to happen before the cannabis is added to fat - because the chemical conversion is heat-driven, not solvent-driven.
Decarb temperatures and times
| Method | Temperature | Time | Conversion efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combustion | 600–900°F | seconds | ~70% (lots lost to smoke) |
| Vaporization | 350–430°F | minutes | ~85% |
| Oven decarb (flower) | 230–250°F | 30–45 min | ~95% |
| Oven decarb (kief) | 230°F | 25–35 min | ~95% |
| Slow cooker (oil/butter) | 200–220°F | 4+ hours | ~85–90% |
Practical home decarb protocol (informational only)
Spread cannabis flower (broken into small pieces, not ground to powder) on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Preheat oven to 240°F. Bake for 35–40 minutes. The flower should turn a deeper golden-brown color but not black or charred. Cool completely before infusing into oil, butter, or tincture.
For kief or pre-decarbed concentrate, the time is shorter (20–30 minutes) at the same temperature. Already-decarbed concentrates (like distillate or rosin that's been heat-processed) don't need an oven step.

The decarb-and-edible gotchas
The biggest home-cooking error is overheating. Above 260°F, THC starts converting into CBN - meaning your edibles get more sedating but lose the THC kick. The second biggest error is undercooking: pulling the flower at 20 minutes leaves significant THCa unconverted, meaning your edible doses below the calculated amount.
Commercial edibles handle decarb in industrial ovens or solvent processes that achieve consistent ~95% conversion. This is one reason a 10 mg labeled commercial gummy hits more reliably than a 10 mg labeled homemade brownie. See edibles dosing chart for first-time-user guidance.
Honest caveat
This page is informational. Home cannabis cooking is legal in Nevada under the recreational program for personal use, but quality control of dose accuracy is hard without lab equipment. For predictable dosing, commercial edibles are more reliable. Do not give homemade cannabis edibles to anyone without their explicit informed consent - accidental dosing is unethical and may carry legal risk. See NV cannabis laws.
