Cannabis and Exercise - What the Research Actually Shows

Cannabis and exercise has become a meaningful consumer category - particularly post-2017 in legal recreational states where runners, lifters, climbers, and general fitness consumers have started experimenting with low-dose cannabis as a workout aid or recovery tool. The research is still developing, but the picture is more nuanced than either "always good" or "always bad." We carry low-dose products fit for the exercise use case at Greenleaf Wellness - see the edibles hub, vape hub, and shop page.

The two main use cases

The two main use cases

Pre-workout cannabis. Some athletes report that low-dose THC or CBD reduces pre-workout anxiety, increases workout enjoyment (particularly cardio), and helps "lock in" a focused mental state. Survey research at the University of Colorado-Boulder showed that legal-state runners who use cannabis report longer perceived workout duration and higher enjoyment scores than baseline.

Post-workout cannabis. This is the better-supported use case. Caryophyllene-rich cannabis (CB2 receptor agonism) and cannabinoids generally have anti-inflammatory effects that may reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). CBD particularly is being researched for sports recovery - multiple preliminary trials suggest CBD reduces inflammation markers in athletes.

Practical recommendations

For low-impact aerobic exercise (running, hiking, cycling), low-dose CBD-dominant or 1:1 CBD:THC products are most consistent with the research signals. Aim for 5 mg THC or less if including any THC. Use a tincture or low-dose edible 60 minutes before; or a vape 5–10 minutes before.

For weight training and high-intensity work, the cardiovascular caution dominates. Many athletes prefer post-workout cannabis (caryophyllene-rich flower or CBD topicals) rather than pre-workout. See topicals hub for the topical category.

04 · Honest caveat

Honest caveat

If you have any cardiovascular history (chest pain, arrhythmia, family history of early cardiac events), consult a healthcare provider before combining cannabis with exercise. THC raises heart rate and can lower blood pressure - both relevant during exertion. Cannabis is also banned by some sports federations (NCAA, professional leagues) - check your governing body's rules. See microdosing cannabis for the low-dose protocol.
